Assignment Brief: For this assignment you are asked to create and film a new ‘ident’ for BBC 2. These short quirky creative adverts are shown briefly in between programmes to reinforce the brand identity of BBC2. The reason for you doing a video shoot is to extend your visual skills, composition, use of light, colour, lenses and perspectives etc.., which are the same disciplines as in photography. Alongside the preparation and time management skills, which again link to good working practices. Preparation and planning of this shoot is critical to its success alongside working as a team. You can create your BBC 2 ident either on location or in the studio. Think about scale as the number 2 can be created at any scale and quantity within your movie to reinforce the message. You will be split into groups of around 5, given specific roles and work as a team to produce your final piece of work. Each group member will have a role to fulfil;
1. Cameraman / person – DV video camera operator.(guidance will be provided). 2. Lighting technician – Studio lighting or ambient daylight. (and use of light meter). 3. Set Designer – Make use of college departments and varied resources. 4. Prop stylist – To source props and adjust styling during shoot. 5. Editor – Concentrate on editing software (iMovie or Final Cut Pro, guidance will be provided).
All must take responsibility for their role, nobody will do another persons role, although you will need to be very involved in every stage of production. You must work as a team and be able to complete this task on schedule. Also you must appoint a team leader who will coordinate the project and ensure all tasks are smoothly completed .You are all ‘collectively responsible’ for the whole of the project and helping each other at every stage.
You must ALL develop and research ideas of your own and discuss them within the group as to their merits, some ideas can get combined is some way. Then as a group you can then decide upon ONE final version to be developed and filmed.
The filming of this will take place with a Digital Video Camera or more likely the new FLIP VIDEO CAMERAS, and the footage will be edited using iMovie or Final Cut Pro. You are encouraged to be as creative as possible within these following limitations;
- You must feature a number ‘ 2 ‘ within your ident (size and quantity can vary) (No2 template available from tutor) and it and all associated props must be created to a very high standard. Remember that this college has a rich variety of diverse departments such as 3D, Metalwork, Joinery, Painting and Decorating , etc, you will be expected to take full advantage of these facilities. Please ensure that you are polite and show patience when contacting tutors in other areas of the college.
- The ident must last for approx 10- 30 seconds (approx), And be saved as a .Mov file. Playable in Quicktime.
- The sound must be ambient in nature and appropriate for your theme, also no voiceover, or inappropriate music.
- Remember your idea MUST be practically possible .If it isn’t then your idea may fail .So as a team you must think it through, planning is essential along with good time management. You must record all light meter readings from all your studio sets and record on a Studio Lighting Plan (file on the studio computer) and photograph an overview of all the set and lighting and include this in your sketchbooks.
|
Research: TV idents in their many rich and varied forms .TV, film, adverts and yes you can use Youtube as its use will prove invaluable. Working in your blogs, determine and identify useful information. Critically analyse, organise and manipulate your research, ie ,evidence of development of ideas, visual thinking through exploration and creative use of media .Why not try channel 4 channel 5, etc. You will need to embed and link your video research into your own blog websites.
|
Materials: High quality props, the actual construction of your ‘ 2 ‘ will need to be finished to a high standard in whatever type of material or props you see fit .You must use the number ‘ 2 ‘ template to create your own version .Your mini set construction may also be made of any material and you will also need masking tape, bulldog clips,G-clamps, string, cotton, scissors, craft knife, paintbrushes, etc. Your number 2 can be created at any scale, and also in any quantity.
|
Required for Assessment: 1. 1 BBC 2 ident saved as an iMovie file (.mov) lasting 10 - 30 seconds (approx). Playable in Quicktime. 2. 1 blog website containing all research, ideas, thoughts and final evaluation.
3. And a completed Studio Lighting Plan of your final studio shoot and photograph of set up / build for your shoot.
If you shoot in the studio that is, you may choose to shoot on location of your choice. Evidence of all of the above must be reflective of your role and the role of others within the group. Reflect on how well the team worked together as a group in addition to your own self evaluations.
|
Assessment Method: Observation of technical skills. Production of written notes/terms and evaluations. Finished practical project and group appraisal / evaluation of work.
|
Assessment and Grading: The meeting of criteria evidenced via assessment criteria sheets.

You will be required to investigate photography, media and techniques in the context of stop frame photography and animation. The concept and ideas will need to be drawn and planned in a storyboard. This will be done digitally in photoshop and these then loaded up onto your blog site. The type of cameras, lenses used and the scale, perspective and size of the images and objects / people must be clearly annotated throughout.
A script and storyboard will also be required to reinforce the storyline, this will also need to have sound effects and music that will suit the theme. Each student will produce their own work and present all findings and research on their own blog site. All students are required to explore using other creative areas within the college in order to complete this assignment. This will mean that areas such as 3D, Woodwork, Music Technology and any others that you feel may increase the creativity of the work that you produce.
Test movies will need to be uploaded onto the Blogger website. All students will be using editing software to compile their movies, they will be encouraged to prepare props, backgrounds and wardrobe and styling. 3D objects should be used to add interest along with unusual backgrounds. The time that these will take to be constructed will need to be planned and managed properly and in a timely fashion. Creative use of daylight on location or studio lighting should be incorporated at all times. Study from the origins of animation, as objects, people or both can be used to meet the criteria on this course. You will all be introduced to the photography studio and how the studio and its lighting can alter and creatively affect the work that you produce. The studio can provide you with either flash or more likely continuous lighting with which to work. Equally you can resolve this assignment on location, ideally somewhere creative and
appropriate to your theme All storyboards are to be done in Photoshop and layers can be used in a similar way to the acetate sheets used in animation studios such as Disney. The base layer could be shot as a still photograph image in a simple way to practice flip and stop frame animation in its simplest forms. These can then be shifted and moved as layers and then different animation movements can be achieved.
You could just as likely be working with people and animating them in interesting
scenarios and situations. These can be themed and styled to suit the message you
wish to convey, also music of your choice can be added to complement the mood
of the overall final stop frame video. |
The whole of the research that you gather will need to be evidenced in your own Blogger Website, this will allow you to present your work over the internet. This can include photography, video, audio and written reflective writing. The research will have to span from early animations and flip book work, through to more complex use of people and objects in still frame photography and video/film.
The research should at all times include a selection of 5 photographs and 5 videos to thoroughly evidence the photographers, artists or animators that you study. You are required to research a minimum of 5 different photographers, artists and animators.
The reflective writing needs to be done often and using vocabulary that is befitting of your thoughts and ideas. This written work must accompany all research images and videos. Advice and guidance on how best to do this will be provided. Please refer to the How to Blog and what to write blog entry on the Tutor website for help with this. |
The main benefit of this method of teaching and learning with the Blogger website is that you will not be required to print or use a sketchbook. We will encourage the uploading and use of videos to your blog. Videos will primarily be shot on still SLR digital cameras which will be provided from our camera store. |
You are required to produce blog entries on your website that are clearly labelled against criteria each time so that you know why you are producing them . The label system will provide a clear indicator as to the work that you have produced and what criteria they are aimed at. In this way you can identify which criteria are not met thoroughly enough and ones that are met sufficiently and can be left alone. The stop frame images will be shot with a normal digital SLR camera and then the images will be sequenced and editing to sound effects and music in order to complement your chosen theme. 1. A theme or concept in which your stop frame photography will take place,
with clear drawings and ideas in Photoshop.Or if you use paper to sketch ideas these will
need to be scanned into your blog sites. 2. Mind mapping and sketching of ideas, characters, objects (again in Photoshop/or paper) 3. A stop frame movie with simple objects, people or characters. 4. A comprehensive set of blogs which include research of other artists, photographers and animators (see what is required for assessment below).
You have 6 weeks to complete this assignment
The website that you produce will also include stop frame videos that you have created.
These will need to be edited in either iMovie or Final Cut software and then uploaded to
your site. |
Observation of technical skills. Production of written notes/terms and evaluations. Finished practical project and group appraisal / evaluation of work. See marking and grading criteria on the Tutor website. All images and videos must relate consistently and coherently to the themes selected. All work must be referenced back to sources, books and authors. Work has to be your own and can’t simply be downloaded or cut and paste from other peoples work (plagiarism). |
Assessment and Grading: The Tutor support website contains detailed information on the assignment brief with grading information and criteria. The marking criteria will cover pass, merit or distinction, as per unit 23. Please refer to the Tutor site for exact information regarding the assessment and grading via the unit criteria.

Inclusive Practice
The course itself is all set online, that includes all schemes of work along with all lesson plans available for students to view. This is to allow a full inclusion from the learner as to the course. There is a feedback mechanism embedded in the blog which allows students to have their say and voice any concerns or worries about the course its structure and delivery. This allows the student voice to directly affect the next delivery of the scheme of work, and for any improvements that could be considered. At all times students can view any aspect of the course from lesson plan, scheme of work and course outline / criteria from this website. The students have full access to how the whole course is marked and graded via the file downloads tab on this website, plus all other relevant blog entries from the tutor site. The course includes use of cameras and related accessories, studio and portable lighting, location photography, image capture and the portfolio presentation of images, from a variety of subjects either on the website or in printed portfolio format. The students have access to a fully equipped photography studio which has been equipped to professional standards with the latest Hi-Glide system and studio lighting facilities.A camera store has a full range of cameras and lenses which are available to loan.
Equality and Diversity framework
The differentiation of learners and ‘Equality and Diversity framework’ is adhered to via the G.R.A.D.E.S criteria (gender, race, age, disability, ethnicity, sexuality). The teaching and learning styles that are employed in this scheme reflect the needs of the students. Rich and varied media can be used via the website, which can also embed text, video, photographs and audio recordings to allow students to express their individuality and preferred learning style to allow high achievement alongside enjoying the course. Then whole course is set up to offer inclusion from all learners whether they can attend the college or not. Students are able to choose to work online and keep track via the RSS feeds as to what is delivered and expected for each lesson throughout the delivery program. Functional skills and ECM framework
Younger 16-18 year old learners do attend and so the scheme of work reflects that accommodation of differentiation and the ECM criteria. ECM framework: (1) Be Healthy, (2) Be Safe, (3) Enjoy and Achieve, (4) Make a Positive Contribution, (5) Achieve Economic Well-being.
Safeguarding
The safeguarding of students is of paramount importance to allow optimum achievement whilst on this course. The learner is the main focus within the framework of this scheme. This runs alongside the current college support mechanisms.
With the Edmodo system all the data about the students work is secure and only accessible my the tutor, this is done via a locking GROUP CODE key ,also covered by a personal log in and password for each student. Assessment evidence is recorded in an ongoing formative format on a blog website http://www.blogger.com. And allows feedback to be not only given but evidenced on a regular basis to encourage students to stretch themselves and achieve higher. The students all 'self track' and take ownership of each piece of their work by labelling their blogs and images to meet certain criteria. All marking structure is available via the file download tab on this site which clearly shows how all marking and grading is assimilated.
Smart Targets
It is also a focus of this scheme to have clear objectives which are S.M.A.R.T, Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound. With the use of the internet being the whole basis of this course it means that at any given time their is total transparency of events and feedback is both from the tutor and peers. It is my opinion that 'pro monitor' is too disjointed from the learners work and doesn't work as well as this method of working which has proven to work in the high level of attainment achieved by learners on these courses. The labels in Blogger and the tags in Edmodo act as automated software to stack all the work systematically to show not only the criteria each piece of work is aimed at but also how many times the work is aimed or flagged to go towards meeting that criteria.
Student Progression
Progression is accommodated for as you may wish to consider the new level 4 city and guilds course starting soon, more business orientated really but based around setting up in business 'live' and working in 5 specialist areas such as fashion, portrait, advertising, commercial, editorial and pr. The emphasis is on setting up and providing an income from photography rather than purely just exhibiting and showing work. Also the normal progression offered at the college will be onto a Foundation Degree Course in our HE sector, and a final top up year at a chosen University. Student progress is reviewed very regularly not only via tutor tracking but self tracking and labelling via the student blog entries. This ownership of student learning allows and promotes the achievement of higher grades .The practice of online learning has opened up the possibility of Distance Learning Packages being developed within this area. Which will widen participation and encourage a very broad catchment of learners from a differentiated background. The differentiation of learners and how they prefer to learn has been considered at all times. The learners are offered an alternative to working online but so far all learners have been comfortable working this way and are guided and supported at all times.
A very important part of the Edmodo system is that it allows students to build up a personal profile in which they can indicate to staff what their preferred learning styles are along with other useful information.
